STATEHOUSE (March 27, 2017) — Local lawmakers today at the Statehouse honored the Association for the Disabled of Elkhart County for its dedication to Hoosiers with disabilities.

State Reps. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart), Curt Nisly (R-Goshen) and Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) presented a resolution on the House floor thanking ADEC for its hard work in helping the disabled community of Elkhart County.

“Since it was founded, ADEC has helped create new opportunities for Hoosiers with developmental and cognitive disabilities,” Nisly said. “The organization opened Gaining Grounds coffee shops in Goshen and Middlebury to provide meaningful employment to disabled adults and serve as training centers for their clients who are interested in becoming baristas. ADEC has made a positive impact on our community as well as the individuals and families they serve, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them.”

ADEC was founded by a small group of parents concerned about the future of their children living with disabilities. Miller said this organization provides summer camps, after-school clubs, residential and transportation services, while also helping to find employment and housing.

“ADEC, has a lot to celebrate and our community is grateful for those servants who dedicate more than just their time to helping those in need,” Miller said. “This organization is going beyond just teaching clients new skills but helping to connect them to new opportunities. Over the years we have seen those who are associated with ADEC make positive contributions to Elkhart while pursuing their passions.”

ADEC has employed more than 400 Hoosiers while providing over 250 individuals with a 5-day service program serving clients with 11 different primary disabilities.

“For 65 years, ADEC has provided services to more than 1,000 individuals and their families in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties,” Wesco said. “This recognition is well deserved for everyone who has contributed to helping the children in our community succeed.”
