STATEHOUSE — State Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) presented Betty Davis, former executive director of the Social of Greenwood, with the Sagamore of the Wabash award. Betty received the award for her 34-year commitment to the organization at the annual Gala Senior Prom.
“I am honored to present this prestigious award to Betty,” said Rep. Burton. “Throughout her many years of tireless service to our community, Betty has proven time and again to be a woman of high morals and conviction.”
The Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Gov. Ralph Gates, who served from 1945-1949. The award is the highest honor the Governor of Indiana can bestow. It is presented only to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state.
Betty has served 34 years with the Social of Greenwood, an organization that provides educational and social programs, activities and services that are designed to enhance the quality of life of those 50 and over in the community.
She began as executive director of the organization in 1979. In 2012, she transitioned into a part-time role as Manager of Special Events and retired from the organization in May. The countless hours she worked throughout the years have helped the organization grow to nearly 600 members today.
Betty was also instrumental in developing the Senior Expo which began in 1999 as a way to educate seniors and provide them with valuable educational resources. This year, the event drew 116 vendors and more than 600 attendees. Additionally, she was the driving force behind the Greenwood Craft and Gift Show which now serves as a major fundraiser for the Social of Greenwood.
“Betty's life of service to her community is certainly worthy of such an honor as the Sagamore of the Wabash award,” said Bob Goodrum, executive director of the Social of Greenwood. “Her 34 years of faithful service to the Social of Greenwood is marked with countless lives touched and enhanced.”
