STATEHOUSE (March 20, 2023) – State Rep. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper) said local historian Thomas Kellams recently received the Distinguished Hoosier Award.
Lindauer, who nominated Kellams at the request of his friends and family, said the award was presented to him on March 5 for his community service and dedication to historical preservation in Dubois County.
"Tom has made countless contributions to our community through his service and his work at the Dubois County Museum," Lindauer said. "His drive to collect, preserve and interpret the history and experiences of our community is admirable, and he is incredibly deserving of this recognition."
According to Lindauer, Kellams donated an extensive library of genealogical resources to the Dubois County Genealogical Library at the Dubois County Museum, where he is a founding member. He is also a founding member of the Ireland Historical Society, Inc.
Kellams was instrumental in the donation of the Alexander Schoolhouse to Jasper's Downtown Historic District. He also coordinated Jasper's "Old Time Main Street," and worked with construction workers and other individuals to complete the street.
The Distinguished Hoosier Award is one of the highest awards given to Indiana citizens by the governor. It is awarded to those who distinguish themselves by significant contributions to their communities, and whose qualities and actions endear them in the hearts and minds of Hoosiers.
