STATEHOUSE (Oct. 5, 2022) – Daviess County schools recently received more than $106,000 through the state's Secured Schools Safety Grant Program, according to State Reps. Shane Lindauer (R-Jasper) and Jeff Ellington (R-Bloomfield).

Lindauer said the local funding is part of this year's record-breaking school safety investments totaling more than $22.9 million in matching state grants for 425 schools across Indiana.

"It's a top priority to protect our students and make them feel safe while they are learning at school," Lindauer said. "These grants will allow administrators to invest in the resources that will best make this happen."

Local schools receiving grant funds include:

  • Barr-Reeve Community Schools Inc., $33,385;
  • North Daviess Community Schools, $30,000;
  • Washington Catholic Middle/High School, $18,079; and
  • Washington Community Schools, $25,000.

Ellington said funds can be used for resource officers and law enforcement officers in schools, equipment and technology, active event warning systems, firearms training for teachers and staff who choose to allow guns on school property, threat assessments, and to implement a student and parent support services program.

"There are many options schools can use to ensure the safety of their students and staff," Ellington said. "These grants have gone a long way toward making sure Indiana classrooms are secure."

In total, the state invested about $133 million in matching grants through the Secured School Fund, established through a law passed in 2013.
