STATEHOUSE (Sept. 9, 2025) – State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne), co-chair of Indiana's Artificial Intelligence Task Force, recently met with fellow lawmakers and industry professionals to examine current uses of AI in state government and the potential impact on Indiana's future.
Lehman said the mission of the task force is to explore how AI is being used by state agencies and the private sector, identifying opportunities to better serve constituents utilizing new technologies while safeguarding data privacy.
"Artificial intelligence isn't something the legislature can address with a single bill," Lehman said. "This will be an ongoing conversation that will require us to revisit, adjust and refine our approach as the technology progresses."
Lawmakers heard from the Indiana Office of Technology and the Management Performance Hub about their ongoing AI projects, including the "Ask Indiana" chatbot feature on the state's website along with "Pivot," a tool used by the Department of Workforce Development that provides personalized career and training recommendations.
Lehman highlighted AI's role in advancing Indiana's manufacturing sector and workforce, while stressing the importance of having policies that foster innovation without compromising worker protections. He noted that digital literacy, cybersecurity and human oversight should remain at the center of AI policy.
"Indiana has been the backbone of American manufacturing, and AI can make us even stronger," Lehman said. "Our responsibility is to ensure innovation creates opportunities for Hoosiers, rather than displacement."
