STATEHOUSE – Legislation sponsored by State Representative Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) to allow Hoosiers to transport a recreational vehicle (RV) without a chauffeur’s license was signed into law by the governor. The signing took place at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart.
Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 197 authorizes an individual to transport an RV or towing vehicle and RV without a chauffeur’s license. The gross weight of the RV or the gross combination weight of the RV and towing vehicle must not be more than 26,000 pounds.
“A car can be delivered by motor carrier, but an RV has to be towed or driven one at a time to their retail location,” said Rep. Miller. “Some of our surrounding states, including Michigan, do not require a chauffeur’s license to transport RVs to the lot. Ultimately, this made it more convenient for the local RV industry to hire drivers from these other states. By eliminating this unnecessary regulation, we are working to encourage the RV industry to hire in-state in order to help more Hoosiers find work.”
Approximately 80 percent of all the RVs made in the U.S. come from Indiana. Throughout the state, the industry employs 40,000 to 50,000 people.
