In order for students to connect to their classes, employees to work from home and small businesses to serve their clients, Hoosiers are in need of more reliable broadband. The pandemic has highlighted the gaps in broadband availability this past year. That's why I've joined other lawmakers this session to invest in and expand broadband, especially for our rural communities.
To help close the digital divide, the state budget proposal for the next two years includes $250 million in broadband expansion grants, which would be offered to internet providers. These grants would be used to strengthen access to services for underserved and unserved areas. This investment is the key to getting affordable and reliable internet across Indiana.
House lawmakers supported legislation to prioritize broadband access for students, schools and rural clinics. Indiana currently invests in Next Level Connections Broadband Grant Program, which helps expand fast and reliable services to unserved and underserved locations. The proposal for a new law would strengthen and support that program. A new voucher program would also be created to help schools and clinics cover the cost of getting quality connection to better serve their students and patients.
According to a Purdue University study, there is a return of $3 to $4 for every dollar invested in broadband. Expanding internet infrastructure creates employment opportunities for the construction, installation and maintenance of network equipment, as well as those jobs that come from individuals being able to use the service. Improving our state's broadband infrastructure is a wise investment, not only to connect individuals with each other but to help boost Indiana's economy.
Hoosiers, especially those in rural areas, understand the struggles of finding affordable and reliable internet access. As lawmakers continue working on these issues, it is my hope that our communities will soon have a solution to accessible broadband.
