STATEHOUSE (Sept. 6, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.

According to State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.

"Interning at the Statehouse is a unique experience that provides several learning opportunities for students," Aylesworth said. "By working with lawmakers and managing important responsibilities like tracking bills and writing media releases, students have an opportunity to build on their skills."

State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.

"Building and expanding the connections that you make is important for everyone starting out in their careers," Olthoff said. "I know the interactions and networking that students do at the Statehouse can launch them into a full-time position."

Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

According to State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.

"Not only can students learn and collaborate with others, but they can also earn a paycheck and apply for a scholarship to support their education," Slager said. "I'm always impressed by the ability of the young people who join our team and look forward to working closely with them this upcoming session."

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
