STATEHOUSE (Dec. 22, 2025) – Local communities received over $1.3 million in state funding for local road and bridge projects, according to Lake County lawmakers.
The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, established through a law House Republicans passed in 2016, offers funding to local communities for road repairs, bridge maintenance, intersection upgrades and other infrastructure projects. Nearly 200 communities received $100 million in state matching grants for this round of funding.
"Community Crossings is a great way for smaller communities to improve their roads and bridges," said State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron). "I am excited to see so many towns, cities and counties prioritizing safety and infrastructure projects."
Area grant recipients include Lowell ($384,752) and Lake County ($1 million).
"Safe roads and bridges are essential for thriving communities," said State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point). "Community Crossings grants provide additional funds to help them maintain and improve their infrastructure."
State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville) noted that to be eligible for funding, smaller municipalities must contribute 20 percent in local funds, while larger communities are required to provide a 50 percent match. State guidelines also ensure that half of the available matching funds each year are directed to communities in counties with populations of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, the Community Crossings program has invested over $2 billion in enhancing local roads and bridges.
"With so many travelers using Indiana's roadways, it is important to maintain and update areas of high use," Slager said. "These grants are a great tool to help keep drivers safe."
