STATEHOUSE (Dec. 16, 2024) – Lake County legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.
House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) was reappointed as chair of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, and will serve as a member of the House Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development and the House Environmental Affairs Committee.
"As a farmer and lifelong Hoosier, I am excited to dive back into the agricultural topics that make our state so unique," Aylesworth said. "This session, we will continue to preserve Indiana's rich agricultural history and look for ways to expand and innovate the future of farming."
State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) will serve as vice chair of the House Education Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee, and as a member of the House Family, Children and Human Affairs Committee and the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee.
"Keeping Indiana an employment destination that fosters growth and development for all businesses is important," Olthoff said. "With my experience starting and maintaining a small business, I understand the struggles and challenges many Hoosiers face and look forward to addressing those this session."
State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville) was appointed vice chair of the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee. He will also serve as vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee's Local Government Finance Committee and will as a member of the House Financial Institutions Committee. Slager said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.
"Every two years, Indiana lawmakers have the responsibility of passing a new budget to carry the state forward," Slager said. "With so much planning and discussions still left to do, I am eager to dive deeper in evaluating this year's budget."
House lawmakers are scheduled to convene at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 8 for the first day of the 2025 legislative session. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
