STATEHOUSE (March 31, 2022) – More Hoosier mothers will receive important medical coverage before and after the births of their babies under a new law supported by State Reps. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) and Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron).

The new law, supported by both sides of the aisle and co-authored by Olthoff, provides pregnant women greater access to Medicaid benefits by increasing the ceiling on income requirements. The law also extends the timeframe during which mothers can receive coverage.

"It's critical to ensure mothers have access to quality medical care for a longer period of time," said Olthoff, vice chair of the House Public Health Committee. "Many infant deaths, unfortunately, occur in the first few months after they are born, but are preventable. We want to do whatever it takes to keep both the mother and child healthy, and this new law will help us do that."

In addition to increasing eligibility, the Medicaid coverage period will be extended from 60 days after birth to a full year.

According to a report by the Indiana Mortality Review Committee tasked with eliminating preventable maternal deaths in Indiana, 85 percent of pregnancy-related deaths occurred postpartum. Of those deaths, 56 percent occurred after six weeks, according to the study.

"This new law marks a step in the right direction as we continue to drive down the state's maternal and infant mortality rates," Aylesworth said. "Connecting pregnant and new mothers to important medical care will boost the overall health of our state, and give families a stronger start to their lives together."

Pregnant Hoosiers can call 1-844-MCH-MOMS (1-844-624-6667) or email MCHMOMSHelpline@isdh.in.gov for help accessing early and regular prenatal care, and to connect with a network of prenatal and child health care services within the community. To learn more, visit in.gov/health/moms-helpline.
