STATEHOUSE (Dec. 21, 2020) – Lake County lawmakers were recently appointed to several House standing committees and leadership positions.
State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) was appointed to serve as vice chair of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, and newly assigned to the House Environmental Affairs Committee and the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee.
"In committees, lawmakers hear from the public and further explore important issues impacting Hoosiers around the state," Aylesworth said. "A lot can be accomplished, and it is vital we continue finding solutions and working together this session."
State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) was newly appointed to the House Public Health Committee, the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, and the House Family, Children and Human Affairs Committee. She was also named assistant majority whip for the Indiana House Republican Caucus. In this leadership position, Olthoff will work with caucus members on critical issues facing the state.
"The ongoing pandemic has really made the health of Hoosiers a top priority for the upcoming session," Olthoff said. "It will be important for us to find ways to address the challenges facing our overall well-being and health-care system going forward."
State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville) was newly appointed to the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Environmental Affairs Committee.
He said he will use his experience as a CPA to fully vet and offer recommendations for the state's next biennial budget, and ensure it continues to be honestly balanced on behalf of Hoosier taxpayers.
"Passing a budget is one of the key tasks given to lawmakers every two years, and we remain dedicated to ensuring that Indiana does not spend more than it takes in while continuing to fund vital services," Slager said.
Slager also said he appreciated being appointed to the House Environmental Affairs Committee and looked forward to reviewing proposals that improve quality of life while balancing costs to manufacturing and jobs.
House standing committees will meet throughout the legislative session, which is scheduled to kick off on Jan. 4.
