STATEHOUSE (Sept. 10, 2026) – Lake County legislators are encouraging local students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session.
State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) said this paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April.
"The legislative session would not run as smoothly without our interns," Aylesworth said. "This hands-on internship gives students the opportunity to dive into policy, constituent outreach and communications while gaining professional work experience."
State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) said interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process.
"Interning at the Indiana Statehouse is a rewarding experience for students interested in policy, government and the issues shaping our state," Olthoff said. "From professional development to working closely with elected officials and constituents, there is so much for young Hoosiers to gain from the internship."
Positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications.
State Rep. Hal Slager (R-Schererville) said this spring semester internship gives interested students opportunities to interact with state legislators, state agencies and private sector organizations, as well as participate in a weekly speaker series featuring Indiana civic leaders.
"This is a unique internship where students work alongside state lawmakers and become part of the legislative process," Slager said. "I encourage any student looking for a firsthand experience and a chance to learn more about the inner workings of state government to apply."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
