STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2019) – State Reps. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) and Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) honored the Northwestern High School girls basketball team Tuesday at the Statehouse for winning the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship.
“Winning this championship two years in a row is a great accomplishment,” VanNatter said. “Northwestern is establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with, and seeing the hard work of the students and staff of my alma mater pay off is rewarding.”
Northwestern began its championship run after posting a 27-3 regular season record. The Tigers bested Benton Central High School in the championship game, 61-39. Kendall Bostic and Madison Layden, both juniors accounted for a combined 44 points during the final game.
“These student athletes have shown tremendous dedication on and off the court,” Karickhoff said. “Participating in extracurricular activities like this helps students develop life skills such as time management, teamwork, and personal responsibility.”
This is coach Kathie Layden’s second state title with the Northwesters and fifth overall.
