STATEHOUSE (Nov. 9, 2023) – State Rep. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) was recently appointed to serve as vice chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.
"Committees are an important part of the legislative process as we consider different bills for new laws," King said. "It's an incredible honor to be selected as vice chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety committee, and I look forward to diving into my new role for session to best assist our Hoosier service members and veterans, law enforcement officers and first responders."
Last session, King co-authored House Enrolled Act 1555 to remove barriers for out-of-state military families who want to move to Indiana and start working. The new law reduces the requirements that a service member's spouse or dependent children would have to obtain in order to be issued an Indiana occupational license. Previously, the service members' spouse or dependent children would be granted reciprocity if they had maintained a similar out-of-state credential for at least two of the past five years. King said the new law makes an Indiana license more attainable by reducing the time requirement to simply a current credential from out of state that has been maintained for at least one year and which is in good standing.
King also supported a new law to honor members of the armed services, as active-duty military will receive a complete income tax exemption starting in 2024. She said this tax relief could also attract more out-of-state service members and their families to call Indiana home, and help fill the workforce pipeline.
King will continue to serve as Assistant Majority Floor Leader, a House Republican leadership position, and as a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, and the House Public Health Committee.
