STATEHOUSE (April 27, 2022) – Elkhart County communities will receive more than $4.4 million in state matching grants for road and bridge improvement projects, according to State Reps. Joanna King (R-Middlebury) and Doug Miller (R-Elkhart).

In total, 223 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $107 million in state funding through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds, awarded twice a year, are for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage, and can cover material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations.

"These grants give our local governments some flexibility when planning road projects," King said. "It's great to see state dollars supporting our rural areas, because these investments give us more opportunities to improve quality of life and support local businesses."

Area grant recipients include:

  • Bristol $916,759;
  • Elkhart $525,337;
  • Elkhart County $1 million;
  • Middlebury $1 million;
  • Millersburg $147,368;
  • Wakarusa $144,200; and
  • Nappanee $726,746.

As part of the grant program, established in 2016 and expanded through laws supported by Miller, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer.

"Hoosiers and businesses consistently rely on local roads and bridges to be functional and safe," Miller said. "These matching grants will help ensure our area's economy continues to thrive and preserve Elkhart County's reputation as the RV Capitol of the World."

To date, Hoosier communities are on the receiving end of more than $1 billion in Community Crossings Matching Grants.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which oversees and awards the grants, the next call for projects is expected in July. More information can be found at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings or by emailing LPAQuestions@indot.in.gov.
