Statewide 911 fees to be distributed to local governments
INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 17, 2015) – State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) announced that the Statewide 911 Board unanimously approved a disbursement of 911 fees to local governments.
This distribution of funding comes from legislation authored by Karickhoff during the 2015 session to streamline the statewide 911 system. This new law increased funding for this system and provided flexibility for local fiscal bodies to fairly distribute more dollars to support their Public Safety Answering Points.
“After months of work, it was exciting to see the board unanimously back this needed funding change to the statewide 911 system,” Karickhoff said. “By updating this system, we are providing local governments the additional resources needed to deliver the efficient public safety responses all Hoosiers deserve.”
The legislation is expected to increase 911 fee revenue by $12 million per year starting in fiscal year 2016. Karickhoff said that without this legislation, the previous funding mechanism was expected to have a shortfall of $11 million by 2020.
Efforts to streamline the statewide 911 system in the Legislature began in 2012.
