STATEHOUSE (Aug. 24, 2016) — Local communities received state matching grants this week to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo).
This year, Karickhoff supported legislation establishing the state’s Community Crossings matching grant fund, which will provide about $160 million to Indiana cities, towns and counties on a 50/50 matching basis.
“These much-needed funds will help many of our local communities complete road and bridge projects more quickly, which is a win for local governments and residents alike,” Karickhoff said. “Investments in infrastructure are a key component to growing the economy and making our area a better place to live and work. Next legislative session, our priority will be to develop a responsible, long-term plan to fund our state and local infrastructure needs.”
As part of the program, Howard County received $548,199 for road and bridge improvements.
In addition, four local communities were awarded grants, including Fairmount ($71,190), Greentown ($96,400), Kokomo ($1 million), and Russiaville ($32,775).
On Monday, INDOT announced 102 Central Indiana cities, towns and counties were awarded $47 million through the fund. Projects that are eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, road reconstruction, resurfacing, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance in connection with road projects. Material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations were also eligible for funds.
