STATEHOUSE (Aug. 27, 2018) — Greentown recently received a grant for stormwater improvement projects from the U.S. Department of Housing and Rural Development, according to State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo).
Funds are distributed to rural communities through the Community Development Block Grant Program to assist local governments with projects like improving infrastructure, revitalizing communities and long-term development efforts.
Greentown received a $600,000 stormwater system improvement grant to address a number of drainage issues identified in the town’s 2018 Stormwater Utility Master Plan.
“These stormwater infrastructure improvements can help keep residents safe by preventing flooding and land erosion,” Karickhoff said. “Greentown officials have worked hard to pinpoint critical problems in the town’s stormwater system, and this project can have positive, lasting effects for years to come.”
“The receipt of grant funding helps to reduce the impact of these projects on utility rates,” said Greentown Town Council President Scott Deyoe. “This is our third grant related to our utilities and I believe it recognizes that our community is a leader in infrastructure improvements.”
Karickhoff said more than $10 million in federal grant funding was awarded to 19 rural communities through the program. Communities applied for grants across five programs including the Blight Clearance Program, Public Facilities Program, Stormwater Improvement Program, Wastewater Drinking Water Program and Main Street Revitalization Program.
