STATEHOUSE (Dec. 22, 2023) – Fort Wayne's Illinois Road Trail is a step closer to coming to fruition thanks to $1 million in newly released state grant funding from Next Level Trails, according to State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne).
The grant funds will go toward the construction of a new, multi-use 1.97-mile trail that once completed, will provide access to Jefferson Pointe, Rivergreenway, Getz Road Trail, Ardmore Avenue Trail, and local businesses along Illinois Road. Beginning at Rockhill Park, the trail will connect 107 miles of interconnected trails within the Fort Wayne area network spanning 142 miles.
"This new asphalt trail will serve as a corridor that will connect users to local restaurants, shops, schools and neighborhoods," Judy said. "This project will be a great addition to our community for years to come."
Bidding is set to begin in late spring of 2024 in hopes that the project will be completed by spring of 2025.
In total, Next Level Trails has invested $180 million toward the development of biking, hiking and riding trails throughout Indiana. Next Level Trails, part of the Next Level Connections $1 billion infrastructure program, was designed to connect Hoosier communities.
