STATEHOUSE (May 10, 2021) – A bill co-authored by State Rep. Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) supporting public safety officers and boosting accountability and transparency in policing is now law.
Jordan said House Enrolled Act 1006 gives local police departments more tools to hire and employ the best police officers. The law allows for full employment record sharing between departments to vet potential officers and provides additional flexibility to the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board to address significant officer misconduct.
"The safety of our neighborhoods is a collaborative effort between the community and law enforcement officers, much like the process was when this legislation was being crafted," Jordan said. "The upgrades to our state's training facilities and training programs, will help police departments throughout the entire state. They provide a vital service, and they need new tools to continue protecting all Hoosiers."
Jordan said $70 million will be invested to improve training programs and facility upgrades at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, which has not been updated since the 1970s.
House Enrolled Act 1006 sailed through the legislative process, unanimously supported at every step by state lawmakers. The new law is also backed by the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Police Alliance, Indiana Fraternal Order of Police, Indiana Sheriffs' Association, Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police, Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and the Public Defender Commission.
Under the newly passed two-year state budget, departments can also apply for new state grants to purchase body-worn cameras for officers. Jordan said the budget includes nearly $5 million to support raises for Indiana State Police, conservation and excise officers.
