STATEHOUSE (Dec. 15, 2022) – Johnson County lawmakers recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland) will serve as vice chair of the House Education Committee, and as a member of the House Financial Institutions Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

"I look forward to utilizing my experience working in education as we consider legislation to support our students, families and educators," Davis said. "K-12 education represents more than half of the state's $37 billion state budget, and we'll continue to make it a top priority. I also look forward to discussing ways to better prepare our high school students for life after graduation, especially through expanding work-based and applied learning opportunities."

State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville) will serve as a member of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, the House Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee, and the House Family, Children and Human Affairs Committee. He said committees will begin meeting at the start of the 2023 legislative session.

"Serving the needs of families, small-business owners and local farmers is what animates me," Greene said. "I’m grateful for the opportunity to have my committee assignments be so closely aligned with the interests of those that I’m here to serve."

State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) received appointments to serve as a member of the House Environmental Affairs Committee, the House Roads and Transportation Committee, and the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. Haggard said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

"These committee assignments are a great way to tackle issues facing constituents and ensure the voices in our district are well represented," Haggard said. "I'm especially looking forward to leaning on my military experience and background to help support fellow Hoosier veterans and our public safety officers. Increasing public safety and backing our law enforcement will continue to be among my top priorities."

State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) will serve as vice chair of the House Public Policy Committee, and as a member of the House Insurance Committee, and the House Ways and Means Committee.

"My experience working in the insurance industry is certainly helpful as we continue our work to lower out-of-control health care costs for Hoosiers," Mayfield said. "With this being a budget-writing year, I also look forward to serving on House Ways and Means again as we craft another balanced budget that funds essential services, maintains prudent reserves and invests in the future."

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
