STATEHOUSE (Nov. 3, 2023) – Significant state funding is in route to local communities to help complete road and bridge projects, according to Johnson County legislators.
"Whether we're making a trip to the grocery store or going to work, we depend on roads to travel safely," said State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland). "Investing in regular maintenance and updates to our local infrastructure will have long-term benefits for everyone in our community and throughout the state."
State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.
"Our roads play a vital role in Hoosiers' lives all across the state," said State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville). "With this resource, communities and counties of all sizes can use this funding to make important improvements, ensuring safer travels."
Area grant recipients include:
"It's great to see this partnership between local and state governments result in safer and more reliable infrastructure across Indiana," said State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville). "Community Crossings is a prime example of working together to keep our state thriving."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
"Investing in our infrastructure is one of the most important things we can do to keep Hoosiers safe and maintain Indiana's economic viability," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). "For years now, this program has facilitated much-needed updates to roads and bridges, making our state one of the best nationwide in this regard."
