STATEHOUSE (April 15, 2026) – Local schools were recently recognized for achieving high literacy rates by the Indiana Department of Education, according to Johnson County legislators.
"This is a remarkable achievement, showcasing the dedication of teachers across our community," said State Rep. Rob Greene (R-Shelbyville). "Through their efforts, our students have a strong foundation to propel them into the future."
IDOE recognized more than 400 schools across the state achieving a 95% or higher passage rate on the 2025 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment at the Literacy Achievement Celebration at the Statehouse on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
"Literacy is where communication and problem-solving begin for Hoosier kids," said State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville). "Our schools are building the next generation of leaders and a stronger Indiana."

"Congratulations to our local schools on this accomplishment," said State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland), vice chair of the House Education Committee. "Strong literacy is the foundation of a student's education and these schools are ensuring every child is on a path to success."
In 2023, Johnson County legislators supported House Enrolled Act 1558, a bill co-authored by Davis, to implement science of reading standards and provide targeted support for Indiana students experiencing the greatest reading challenges. Last year, Indiana's third grade reading scores improved by nearly five percentage points, which is the largest single-year increase since the state launched IREAD in 2013. More than 87% of Hoosier third graders demonstrated proficiency in reading, putting Indiana's literacy rate at this grade level back to pre-pandemic levels.
These IREAD results follow Indiana placing sixth in the country for fourth and eighth grade reading in the 2024 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) rankings.
"Educators and parents in Johnson County are working together to make sure our students succeed," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). "These results are a testament to the success of their partnership and the incredible dedication and effort occurring in our schools."
