STATEHOUSE (Dec. 14, 2022) – Local legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.
House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) received an appointment to serve as vice chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, and as a member of the House Local Government Committee and the House Public Policy Committee.
"As a former Marine, I understand the challenges facing veterans and their families," Lucas said. "There is always work to do to further support those who have sacrificed for our country. I remain committed to working with my fellow committee members to better serve those who served our great nation."
State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman) will serve as vice chair of the House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications Committee, and as a member of the House Local Government Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, which will begin their work with the start of the 2023 legislative session.
"I appreciate the opportunity to use my experience as an REMC director and county official when serving on these committees," Hall said. "I hope to hear from Hoosiers from all walks of life on what we can do to keep our state moving forward."
State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) received an appointment to serve as chair of the House Local Government Committee and as a member on the House Natural Resources Committee. May said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.
"Committees are where a lot of the heavy lifting occurs as far as crafting and evaluating legislation," May said. "I look forward to diving into issues that matter to Hoosiers and ensuring the voices in our district are heard at the Statehouse."
House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
