STATEHOUSE (June 24, 2022) – Jackson County lawmakers said they plan to support further protections for the unborn and expanded resources for pregnant women in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade on Friday.
State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) said the nation's highest court rightfully returned the question of abortion back to the states by overturning Roe. Indiana lawmakers are expected to take action to further protect life when they return to the Statehouse for a special session.
"I'm dedicated to building on our state's pro-life record and look forward to returning to the Statehouse to take further action on behalf of the unborn," Lucas said. "The Supreme Court made the right call, and we now have the opportunity to save more lives while ensuring new and expectant mothers have the support they need and deserve."
Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced his call for lawmakers to reconvene on July 6 and provide $1 billion in inflation relief to Hoosier taxpayers due to higher-than-expected revenue collections.
"While Indiana has been one of top states in safeguarding the right to life, the reversal of Roe v. Wade allows us to provide even more protections for the unborn," State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) said. "I hope to return to the Statehouse soon to further advocate for our most vulnerable Hoosiers."
In March, Jackson County lawmakers signed onto a letter urging Gov. Eric Holcomb to call a special session should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade. Click here to view and download the letter.
"Today, history was made," Davisson said. "The Supreme Court has made it official that abortion is an issue that belongs to each state. Now it is Indiana's turn to act on this historic opportunity. I look forward to having a robust and respectful discussion on this issue, as there is no greater call to duty than protecting the sanctity of life."
Further details of the special session have not yet been announced and legislation has not been released. However, the General Assembly is expected to vet any legislation regarding abortion through the full legislative process, including hosting committee hearings and public testimony.
