STATEHOUSE (Aug. 26, 2021) – Longstanding Jackson County farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to area lawmakers.
"Owning a farm for over 100 years is an impressive achievement that should be recognized and celebrated," said State Rep. Steve Davisson (R-Salem). "These Hoosier farms not only provide food to our state and country, but they also support jobs and continue to drive our economy forward."
Located in Jackson County, these farms were presented Hoosier Homestead Awards:
"These families have shown great dedication to Indiana's agriculture industry by keeping their farms in operation for generations," said State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford). "I congratulate them on this substantial achievement and thank them for their hard work. I wish them the best in the future."
These four farm families were among 73 recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
"Receiving the Hoosier Homestead award is an exceptional feat for these Indiana farming families," said State Sen. Chris Garten (R-Charlestown). "My first job was on a farm in Southern Indiana, so I experienced firsthand the strength and drive it takes to maintain one. We are proud to have these generations of hard-working farmers represent Indiana's rich agricultural heritage and contribute greatly to our economy."
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial awards.
"Our strong economy is dependent on the agriculture industry," said State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour). "These farming families not only feed the world, but they also provide jobs and support our communities."
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit in.gov/isda.
