STATEHOUSE (Nov. 3, 2017) – State Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) was recognized today as the 2017 Legislator of the Year by the Indiana School Counselor Association for her legislation supporting youth suicide prevention.

“School counselors have a unique opportunity to influence the lives of young people,” Olthoff said. “Being named the ISCA Legislator of the Year is a great honor. I do my best to work on policies that support a healthy lifestyle for all residents. Putting legislation into place that helps counselors better serve children is good for the whole state. When children grow up with support, they have a much better chance at success.”

In an effort to curb youth suicides in the state, Olthoff authored a new law tasking healthcare providers and those, including school counselors, who work with children at schools to participate in youth suicide and prevention training.

"Representative Olthoff shares our lifework of advocating for student success,” said Jen Money-Brady, Indiana School Counselor Association board president. “She knows what a critical role school counselors’ play in student achievement and well-being. Julie has been a voice for those working with students tackling a variety of issues ranging from career and academic decisions, problems at home, to bullying and suicide prevention. She is a passionate advocate for the school counseling profession, and most importantly, Indiana’s students.”
