Note to the press: Please include the following statement from House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) in your coverage of Gov. Eric Holcomb announcing over 4 million Hoosiers are expected to receive a $125 tax refund after they file their 2021 taxes. Huston said Hoosiers will see this benefit since the state's excess reserves triggered an automatic taxpayer refund. In Indiana, state reserve balances in excess of 12.5% of the next year's budget is required to be split with half dedicated to pay down pension obligations and the other half given back to taxpayers. Huston said about $545 million will go to taxpayers and another $545 million toward pension liabilities. To ensure all filers receive a refund, regardless of their tax liability, Huston said House and Senate leadership will work in coordination with the governor's office to pass legislation during the 2022 session to help streamline the process.
STATEHOUSE (Dec. 15, 2021) – "This taxpayer refund is just more proof that Indiana's strong, fiscal conservative leadership, which pays its bills and plans for the future, is rewarding Hoosiers. Our economy continues to outpace expectations and I'm excited to find additional ways to put dollars back into taxpayers' pockets through tax cuts this session."
