Note to the Press – House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) provided the following statement today in response to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s State of the State address:

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 19, 2021) – "Governor Holcomb did a great job highlighting the challenges and impact Indiana has faced because of the COVID-19 health crisis and the opportunities we have moving forward. His steady and strong leadership has been critical over the past 10 months and Indiana has benefitted from it.

'Whether it's improving rural broadband, enhancing telehealth opportunities, or empowering more Hoosier families to make educational choices that best meet their child's needs, we have many opportunities to make sure the lessons we learned during the pandemic pay off for Hoosiers.

"This session, we're fast-tracking a number of our shared legislative priorities, including supporting small businesses and K-12 public schools. We're already moving a bill to extend temporary, COVID-19 liability protections to businesses, schools and health-related entities, which is critical to protecting jobs and keeping businesses open. Lawmakers are also acting quickly on legislation to fully fund our K-12 public schools this academic year, which is important as our teachers and administrators continue to manage through COVID-19 concerns.  We are also providing $30 million in grants to Indiana small businesses, especially those in the hospitality industry, as they have often been the most economically impacted by the pandemic.

"While the pandemic isn't over, Indiana's strong leadership, resilience and years of fiscal prudence have positioned us to not only bounce back but hit the accelerator. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor Holcomb and our Senate colleagues to boost Indiana's recovery and ensure all Hoosiers have the opportunity to succeed."
