State Representative Todd Huston (R-Fishers) and fellow state representatives welcomed a group of House pages on Thursday as part of the Special Olympics and Best Buddy Page Day.
Special Olympics of Indiana athletes and participants in the Best Buddies program served as House pages for the day, where they had the opportunity to meet and assist their state representatives, tour the Statehouse and learn about the legislative process by watching a House session.
Special Olympics of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These athletes represent 74 county and local programs each run by volunteer management teams who recruit participants, conduct sports training, raise money, build awareness and compete at local and state events.
Best Buddies is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“I am so glad I was able to participate with Best Buddies and the Special Olympics organizations today,” said Rep. Huston. “I had a great time meeting the students, staff and mentors involved with these programs, and I’m grateful for all the positive events and different learning experiences they put on for the students and families around our state.”
The Statehouse welcomed 14 athletes and 16 Best Buddies who served as pages, along with a number of students and volunteers assisting the two organizations. All of the participants received special recognition by the House at the beginning of session.
