STATEHOUSE (March 13, 2017) – State Rep. Todd Huston (R-Fishers) today at the Statehouse honored the We the People team from Fishers Junior High School with a House resolution.
The team won the We the People state championship in December, and will represent the community in the fifth-annual We the People National Invitational for junior high school competitors this spring.
We the People is an advanced eighth grade civics class where participants learn about the constitution and case law. They then participate in a competition that consists of simulated congressional hearings where the students testify before panels of judges who score them on a performance-based assessment.
“The We the People program is a unique way for students to learn about civic responsibility and how they can be involved in their government,” Huston said. “The students who are part of the team have the opportunity to better understand democratic principles and how it applies to their lives.”
Huston said 31 students participate on the team and nearly 95 percent of those students are on the National Junior Honor Society.
