Huston: 2026 legislative session ends with new laws to lower costs for Hoosiers, reduce government bureaucracy

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 27, 2026) – The 2026 legislative session ended with the passage of new laws to lower costs for Hoosier families and reduce government bureaucracy, said Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers).

House Republicans advanced several priority bills this year to improve housing and energy affordability, reduce government regulation and protect taxpayers.

"This session was focused on affordability for Hoosier families and streamlining government to better serve taxpayers," Huston said. "We advanced new laws to expand Indiana's housing supply and drive down costs of homeownership and to reform our regulatory process so that utilities are prioritizing affordability. These are significant efforts that put Hoosier pocketbooks first. We also passed new laws to better protect young Hoosiers, cut taxes for veterans and workers, reduce unnecessary government and embrace economic opportunity for our state."

Below are the House Republican agenda items that advanced the legislature this year and have either been signed into law by the governor or await his signature to become law:

1. Expand Indiana’s housing supply and drive down costs of home ownership by rolling back costly regulations that impede development (House Enrolled Act 1001, authored by Rep. Doug Miller, R-Elkhart)
2. Prioritize energy affordability by adding performance-based accountability to ensure utilities are hitting targets aimed at reducing costs and increasing reliability (House Enrolled Act 1002, authored by Rep. Alaina Shonkwiler, R-Noblesville)
3. Reduce government by combining, eliminating or streamlining dozens of redundant or inactive boards and commissions (House Enrolled Act 1003, authored by Rep. Steve Bartels, R-Eckerty)
4. Cut red tape in education by eliminating unnecessary rules and regulations, freeing up resources and giving K-12 schools more flexibility to focus on educating our kids (House Enrolled Act 1004, authored by Rep. Bob Behning, R-Indianapolis)
