STATEHOUSE (Nov. 4, 2021) – Kokomo will receive $829,000 in state matching grants to steer toward much-needed road improvement projects, according to Howard County lawmakers.
State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) said 218 towns, cities and counties throughout Indiana received a combined total of over $101 million through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program. The Indiana General Assembly established the program in 2016 and then expanded it in 2017. The Indiana Department of Transportation oversees and distributes these grants twice each year.
"Kokomo continues to grow, which puts an additional strain on the infrastructure," Karickhoff said. "With this grant, local roadways can be preserved and improved on so that they function for years to come."
State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) said communities can use these funds for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50 percent match.
"Winter weather in Indiana is tough on our roads, making repairs necessary," VanNatter said. "Hoosiers in our community and around the state continue to see significant infrastructure improvements due to this grant program."
He said more information about the program and recipients can be found online at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings.
