STATEHOUSE (March 27, 2019) – Local family farms were recently recognized at the Statehouse for being in operation for more than 100 years, according to local legislators.
The Alice L. Maish and Myron E. Maish Farm, located in Russiaville and in operation since 1860, received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award. The Peters Farm, located in Kokomo and in operation since 1908, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award.
“Nearly all of Indiana’s farms are family owned, with generations making a positive impact on our agriculture industry,” said State Sen. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo). “To be awarded a Hoosier Homestead is a great honor, and I admire these families for their continued dedication and hard work.”
“Farms like these embody the spirit and commitment of Indiana’s agricultural heritage,” said State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo). “It is important to recognize the decades of perseverance these families exhibited for generations to strengthen our communities and Howard County.”
“Farming is a way of life for many Hoosiers,” said State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo). “In addition to providing locally grown goods, these farms contribute to the state’s economy and support many jobs in our area.”
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for the centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial award.
