STATEHOUSE (Jan. 28, 2022) – The Indiana House of Representatives this week unanimously voted to advance State Rep. Hal Slager's (R-Schererville) legislation that would expand Hoosiers' access to needed emergency medical services.
Under the Medicaid program, emergency medical service's reimbursement rate has not increased since 1976. Slager said the reimbursement rate is too low and is making it difficult to hire qualified first responders, which is negatively impacting ambulance response times to help Hoosiers. Slager's legislation would raise the Medicaid reimbursement rate to match the federal Medicare rate, which would better match the cost providers are facing and ensure Hoosiers receive life-saving medical attention when they need it most.
"For Hoosiers in need of lifesaving medical attention, it's essential they aren't waiting for ambulance rides because providers can't afford to keep vehicles on the road and crews fully staffed," Slager said. "Every minute is critical and could make the difference between life and death. My legislation would ensure we fairly compensate providers and ensure Hoosiers have access to medical services."
