STATEHOUSE (Jan. 31, 2018) — The House of Representatives today voted in support of State Rep. Mike Karickhoff’s (R-Kokomo) bill that would help local governments collect unresolved debts.
Currently, state agencies and departments have the ability to collect owed taxes before income tax refunds are provided to taxpayers. House Bill 1262 would expand this protocol to local governments.
“This bill would help ensure local governments receive what they are owed since they fund public safety, schools and other services while investing tax dollars in our communities,” Karickhoff said. “It would also help reduce the time and resources spent on costs related to the notices and hearings necessary for local governments to request a refund offset, and that money could be redirected to other programs.”
Karickhoff said if an individual’s tax refund is intercepted, they would be notified by the Department of Revenue. This legislation will also formalize the appeal process for taxpayers to contest these intercepts if they believe the action was incorrect.
The bill can now move to the Senate for further consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
