House supports Behning’s bill creating Out of School Time Learning Advisory Board
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 22, 2016) — The House of Representatives voted 90-4 in support of legislation sponsored by State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) that would create the Out of School Time Learning Advisory Board.
Senate Bill 251 would establish an advisory board to identify before- and after-school programs. Currently, there are 967 after-school programs registered with the Indiana After School Network—over half of these programs take place at a school.
“Students who receive supplemental enrichment outside the classroom have shown improvement in subject areas inside the classroom,” said Behning, chair of the House Committee on Education. “My top priority will always be ensuring students have access to the best possible education. By facilitating and encouraging schools to establish before- and after-school programs in the future, more students will be able to grow and excel within the classroom.”
The Out of School Time Learning Advisory Board would recommend procedures, policies, funding levels and eligibility criteria for out-of-school time programs to the Indiana General Assembly and Department of Education.
