STATEHOUSE – State Representatives John Price (R-Greenwood) and Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) honored Robert Hyatt with House Concurrent Resolution 2, recognizing him for his years of dedicated service to his country and his state. The resolution passed the House unanimously. Robert Hyatt was also presented with a Sagamore of the Wabash on behalf of Governor Pence.
“It is a great honor and privilege to present this resolution to Robert Hyatt, a true American hero. His selfless acts are inspiring and deserving of recognition,” said Rep. Price. “Robert Hyatt has dedicated more than 20 years of his life to our great nation. He is a true hero and embodies the values of bravery and devotion.”
Robert began his incredible career as a field medic in the United States Army from 1943-1945, under General George S. Patton. During his service in World War II, he was shot in the leg and honorably discharged. In 1950, Hyatt reenlisted in the Army, serving in the Korean War. He was injured by a bayonet while providing medical aid to a dying solider.
After his recovery from his second injury, he continued to serve two tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan from 1950 until 1952 and finished his tour at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as an anesthesiologist. He was honorably discharged in March 1953.
With the conclusion of his time in the Army, Hyatt immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and took his last tour of duty in Vietnam. He worked directly on the expansion of the Da Nang Air Base.
Robert Hyatt served 20 years of active duty in the United States Military that spanned four continents, incurred two significant combat injuries and several commendations including five Bronze Service Stars. Sergeant Robert Hyatt was transferred from the United States Marine Corps to the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve on July 15, 1966.
Hyatt then traveled the world before returning home to Indiana to start his own family, and he worked as a security guard for several businesses in Indiana and Illinois.
“It is important that we recognize the great sacrifices made by Indiana veterans like Robert Hyatt in their service to our country,” said Rep. Burton. “It is an honor to have Robert in our community, and I am deeply appreciative for the sacrifices he has made to keep our country safe and to protect our freedoms.”
Through his extensive military career, Robert is able to be a part of the prestigious veteran organization, All Three Wars. Hyatt is only one of two Hoosier veterans serving as a member of this organization.
