STATEHOUSE (Jan. 23, 2018) — The House of Representatives today voted in support of State Rep. Doug Miller’s (R-Elkhart) bill that would help counties save on operating costs by consolidating ordinance violations.
Miller said his legislation would allow a county to enter into an interlocal agreement with a city to handle ordinance violations. The city court would have jurisdiction rather than the county’s trial court.
"It was brought to my attention that a lot of these matters go to already overwhelmed circuit courts and these violations often fall through the cracks and are not enforced,” Miller said. “This bill allows these violations to go to city court, which is much more responsive to items like this.”
Miller said with this bill, code enforcement will now have an option to deal with habitual zoning and ordinance offenders in a more timely way.
House Bill 1140 can now be considered by the Senate. For more information visit, iga.in.gov.
