STATEHOUSE (Jan. 29, 2026) – The Indiana House of Representatives recently approved several pieces of legislation co-authored by State Rep. Ethan Lawson (R-Greenfield) to support our military members and first responders and improve local election efficiency.
"Supporting our first responders, military members and veterans will always be among my top priorities," Lawson said. "I'm proud we could make progress this session to strengthen benefits for those who are injured or give their lives in the line of duty and to ensure our National Guard is trained and equipped to support local law enforcement and uphold public safety."
House Bill 1044 would support public safety employees, including police officers and firefighters, who are injured or disabled during their service by ensuring they can remain on their employer's insurance plan at the same rate they paid while actively serving. Surviving spouses or dependents of public safety employees who give their lives in the line of duty could maintain their health coverage without facing unexpected premium increases. The bill passed the House unanimously by a 92-0 vote.
HB 1343 supports local law enforcement and school resource officers, streamlines veterans' services, and provides additional training and support to Indiana National Guard soldiers and airmen who may be directed by the governor to assist local law enforcement during an emergency. The bill passed the House 67-29.
HB 1055 would increase election efficiency by giving all cities and towns the option to conduct their elections in even-numbered years. Currently, many municipalities are required to spend taxpayer dollars to hold their elections for mayors and council members when no other offices are on the ballot. By moving a city or town’s election to when the president and congressional offices are already on the ballot, they could save taxpayer dollars and increase voter turnout. The bill passed the House by a 59-35 vote.
"This bill will give cities and towns more flexibility to hold their elections when voter turn out is highest, leading to more voter participation and lower election costs," Lawson said.
The House previously approved four bills Lawson authored this year to address home affordability and increase child care access (HB 1152), support public safety (HB 1202), enhance efficiency and accountability in local government (HB 1161) and prevent fraud (HB 1153).
These bills will now move to the Senate for further consideration to become law.
