STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2018) — The Indiana House of Representatives yesterday voted in favor of legislation co-authored by State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) that would help streamline Hoosier workforce programs and funding.

According to Sullivan, Indiana currently spends about $1 billion across nine agencies that offer 30 different workforce programs. House Bill 1002 would require an evaluation of the state’s workforce programs and funding to find both strengths and areas in need of improvement.

“This bill would ensure the state better utilizes resources connecting Hoosiers with high-wage jobs in high-demand fields,” Sullivan said. “Working to restructure our workforce development programs will aid in connecting individuals with the proper training needed to secure a job while helping to align the needs of employers and workers.”

Under this proposal, a Next Level Workforce Training and Development Fund would be established to ensure investments are made into these programs each year. To connect Hoosier employees and jobseekers with state resources, the bill also proposes the Indiana Department of Workforce Development would inform local school officials and students on grants and programs that are available.

House Bill 1002 can now be considered by the Senate. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
