House advances Hall's resolution calling for congressional term limits

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 31, 2024) — The Indiana House of Representatives recently passed a bipartisan resolution authored by State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman) that would add Indiana to the states seeking a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution to include congressional term limits.

Article V of the Constitution allows for the legislatures of two-thirds of the states to call a convention for proposed constitutional amendments. If passed, Hall's resolution would add Indiana to the list of states seeking a convention to propose term limits for members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.

"Unfortunately, partisan gridlock and runaway spending reflect the disconnect between the halls of Congress and main street America," Hall said. "By implementing congressional term limits, we can reverse the top-down power structure in Washington, D.C., and hold our elected officials more accountable."

According to a survey conducted last year by the nonprofit organization U.S. Term Limits, over 75% of Hoosier voters support congressional term limits, including Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

After 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic, and the term limits amendment is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.

House Joint Resolution 3 now moves to the Senate for further consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov
