STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2025) – State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion) authored legislation for Indiana to join the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact, making it easier for dental professionals from other states to practice here and improve access to dental care for Hoosiers. February is recognized as Dental Health Month.

“This bill highlights the importance of oral health and the need for more accessible dental care,” Goss-Reaves said. “By joining the DDH Compact, we would not only improve opportunities for our dental professionals but also ensure that more patients in Indiana have access to the care they need.”

House Bill 1031 would establish the framework for Indiana to participate in the DDH Compact, allowing licensed dentists and dental hygienists to practice in any participating state as long as they meet the compact’s requirements. The bill also includes provisions for active-duty military members and their spouses to practice in participating states with no or reduced fees.

“Dental professionals are essential to maintaining public health, and this bill would allow them to serve more communities, particularly in areas that may face shortages of dental care providers,” Goss-Reaves said. “I believe this bill would assist both professionals and patients alike.”

Data from the American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute shows a shortage of dental health professionals in Indiana, particularly in rural areas. Goss-Reaves said the bill would address this issue and would have a governing commission to regulate the compact’s operations to ensure compliance across states.

House Bill 1031 passed the House with bipartisan support and now moves to the Senate for further consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
