STATEHOUSE (Feb. 22, 2017) – The Indiana House of Representatives voted unanimously today in support of  State Rep. Greg Beumer’s (R-Modoc) proposal to prevent fraud in drug tests.

According to Beumer, synthetic urine products are marketed to help users pass drug tests. The directions instruct a customer to shake the fake specimen, microwave the liquid on high for 10 seconds, and then make sure the temperature is between 94-100 degrees. The kit comes with a heating pack to keep the product warm and has a flip-cap to easily dispense.

“Indiana is experiencing a drug epidemic,” Beumer said. “The intent of this legislation is certainly not to make people lose their jobs over a failed drug test. It’s more about if you have a problem, let’s look at it and try to solve the problem. Employers also deserve to know if a job candidate is truly drug free.”

This proposal would increase the penalty of selling and using synthetic urine during a drug test to a Class A misdemeanor, instead of a Class B misdemeanor.
House Bill 1104 now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
