STATEHOUSE (June 4, 2018) — Gov. Eric Holcomb today at the Statehouse ceremonially signed a new law sponsored by State Rep. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) allowing the use of a new technology developed in Indiana to help deliver mobile and modular homes.
Miller said the innovation is a disposable trailer designed for a single use of transportation of a sectionalized building. After the trip, parts of the trailer may be recycled or sold.
“This new law streamlines the registration process and enables more innovative strategies to be implemented in the modular home market,” Miller said. “These disposable trailers will reduce the costs of transporting houses, saving both the manufacturer and consumer money in the long run.”
Under this law, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will issue a transport operator license plate to a manufacturer using a disposable trailer to transport a modular house. The manufacturer will be able to reuse the transport operator license plate on different disposable trailers, so after one house is delivered, the transporter could remove the plate and attach it onto the next disposable trailer. Since these trailers are only used once, they would not be subject to traditional trailer registration.
This law goes into effect July 1. To learn more about Senate Enrolled Act 375, visit iga.in.gov.
