STATEHOUSE (June 12, 2023) – Hoosier military members are set to receive much-needed tax relief thanks to a new law supported by local lawmakers.
Currently, active-duty service members are eligible for a $5,000 deduction from the state individual income tax. Under the new law recently signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, active-duty military members will receive a complete income tax exemption beginning in January regardless of their deployment status. National Guard and reserve members already receive a $5,000 deduction, and a full income tax exemption when mobilized or on duty.
"This new law is a way to give back to the men and women in the military who give up time away from their families to protect us," said State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown), who co-authored the bill. "Just like they continuously have our backs in the fight for our freedoms, we need to show that we have theirs as well."
According to State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond), who also co-authored the law, other states, including Michigan and Kentucky, offer a full income tax exemption to all service members.
"Our service members need our support, both at home and abroad," Barrett said. "I'm honored to co-author legislation recognizing these heroes that have already given so much."
"Hoosiers with experience in the military have much-needed skills and talents that could go a long way when they enter the private sector," said State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City). "This military pay exemption supports active-duty military and hopefully encourages them to live and work in Indiana when they're done serving."
