STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – Henry County communities can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.

A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.

"For years, Community Crossings Grants have helped communities, including ours, complete important projects to improve roadways," said State Rep. Brad Barret (R-Richmond). "Keeping our focus on maintaining and building a strong infrastructure will help us attract new opportunities and growth."

Area grant recipients include:

  • Henry County, $1.5 million;
  • Knightstown, $644,781;
  • Middletown, $109,458; and
  • Mount Summit, $190,582.

"Indiana is one of the top-rated states for transportation infrastructure, and this program is a big reason why," said State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown). "The grant offers much-needed funding for communities to ensure roadways in our state are safe and efficient."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Quality roads and bridges are critical to keeping our residents, businesses and economy moving forward," said State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City). "We can now give the green light on much-needed maintenance and improvement projects due to this state funding."
