STATEHOUSE (Sept. 6, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"Interning with the Indiana House of Representatives is a great opportunity for young professionals to gain valuable skills that they can apply in the workforce," Thompson said. "From communicating with Hoosiers around the state to assisting with media requests, House interns manage important tasks and help session run more smoothly."
State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"No matter your major, there is a lot of value in interning with our team," Steuerwald said. "We welcome students with different backgrounds and experiences, as long as they want to work hard and learn."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Young Hoosiers can benefit greatly by building up their professional portfolio and networking with leaders from across the state," said State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville). "There is a lot to gain by interning with the Indiana House of Representatives and I encourage local students to apply soon."
According to State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.
"With a House internship, college students and recent graduates will learn a lot while also applying their classroom knowledge in a professional setting," Haggard said. "They can use their internship to help launch their careers and make their resumes stand out with employers. With interviews happening right now, it's time to go online and apply."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
