STATEHOUSE (Jan. 12, 2022) – State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) authored legislation to create a tuition supplement program for Hoosiers serving as reserves in the armed forces.

Through the Reservist Tuition Supplement Program, Hoosiers serving in a reserve role for any branch of the U.S. military would be eligible for a scholarship covering full tuition costs for up to four years. The scholarship could be used at any state educational institution for reservists pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in a STEM field or teaching. Indiana National Guard members would be eligible as well.

"We have over 5,000 Hoosiers enlisted as reservists in all branches of our armed forces, who've taken a solemn oath to defend this great country," Heaton said. "This program could be an impactful way for them to continue their education in an in-demand field. It would not only benefit them and their families, but also communities all over Indiana."

Eligible Hoosier reservists already receiving financial aid could still get a scholarship through the program equal to their remaining tuition balance. Recipients would need to maintain a cumulative grade point average deemed satisfactory by their school.

House Bill 1076 is assigned to the House Committee on Ways and Means for consideration. Watch session and committees live, and view legislation at iga.in.gov
